Instagram, comic books and public engagement: One watchdog’s plan to protect inspector general independence
Lucy Lang, the inspector general for New York state, argued in an interview with Government Executive that IGs should prioritize improving the public’s trust in government — both through investigations and making sure citizens know that oversight is happening.
The call for increased transparency and public engagement from New York state's inspector general, Lucy Lang, highlights a growing concern among watchdogs about the need to protect the independence of their offices. As Lang noted, building trust in government is crucial, and inspectors general can play a significant role in achieving this goal through their investigative work and by communicating effectively with the public.
This emphasis on public engagement is particularly relevant in the context of the inspector general community, which has faced scrutiny and criticism in recent years. By leveraging various channels, including social media platforms like Instagram, to share their work and findings, IGs can help to demystify their role and demonstrate their commitment to accountability and transparency. For instance, using comic books to explain complex investigative processes can make them more accessible to a wider audience.
As the inspector general community continues to evolve, it's essential to watch how Lang's approach is implemented and whether it yields tangible results in terms of increased public trust and engagement. Additionally, it will be crucial to observe how other IGs respond to Lang's call to action and whether they adopt similar strategies to prioritize public engagement and transparency. The effectiveness of these efforts will likely have implications for the broader conversation about government accountability and the role of oversight bodies in ensuring the integrity of public institutions.
